Golden Eagles drop two in Golden State
Fall to Texas and Oregon State in first day of tourney

The Golden Eagle softball team fell to a couple of top-tier opponents on the West Coast on Thursday, losing to Texas and Oregon State.
It took a walk-off home run by Texas (6-4) in the bottom of the seventh to lift the Longhorns to a victory over Tech (5-6) in the Cathedral City Classic Tournament in California.
Sophomore Maddie Schmissrauter had a strong day on the mound against the Longhorns, pitching 6 1/3 innings and striking out six, but took the loss, giving up the game-winning home run to sophomore Amy Hooks of Texas.
Freshman Jordan Leff hit her first career home run on the first pitch she saw from Texas pitcher Brittany Barnhill in the fifth inning.
Fellow freshman Whitney Cummings reached base three times and drove in her sixth run of the year.
In game two, it was Oregon State's pitching that Tech was unable to overcome as the Golden Eagles could muster just one run on five hits against the Beavers' ace, Kelly Dyer.
Tech's only offense of the game came with two outs in the sixth when sophomore Lacie Coquerille doubled to left center and scored on an infield single by Cummings.
Freshman Holly Thomas suffered her third loss of the year, allowing five runs on five hits by the Beavers.
After giving up two doubles and throwing two wild pitches in the fourth, coach Tory Acheson put Cummings on the mound.
Cummings faced five batters in the sixth, giving up one run on two hits and striking out one.
Tech will play two again on Friday, facing Loyola Marymount and UC Santa Barbara and rounding out its trip on Saturday as the Golden Eagles will take on Brigham Young.
